Now that all of the hub-bub is over with the recent elections, the Indiana Legislators for 2011 are identified. These are the leaders we must look to for any law changes that may be introduced or passed in regard to meth. Indiana has been seriously recognized as the third state in the US to consider the change back to making pseudoephedrine available by prescription only (it was once a prescription before 1976). Oregon was first, Mississippi was second. We still have legislators arguing for a tracking method option instead, but this method has already been proven to fail.
Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control in Washington recently stated, "In this environment of finite law enforcement and prosecutorial resources, it is important to ask which is more valuable: a tool that facilitates the investigation, arrest, prosecution and incarceration of meth lab operators and diverters of PSE, or a policy THAT PREVENTS THESE ACTIVITIES FROM HAPPENING." Please see Director Kerlikowske's full letter to the Indiana Legislative Study Committee that is considering a recommendation to the Indiana House for a PSE prescription bill in Indiana for the next session here: Director's Letter to Indiana
His message is a practical one: do we really have the extra resources in this economy to continue fighting a problem we could eliminate instead? The Speaker of the House for Indiana has changed hands, and the new speaker is much more inclined to pass through a PSE Prescription Bill.
